Discussion of whether church will be open this Sunday based on whether there is power.
General decision that if there is no power in the FLC, the church will be closed. During discussion, Council was notified that power was on at church. Another storm is arriving, however. It was decided that if the church has no power Saturday at noon, notifications will be sent that there will be no church. Channel 29, among other communication venues .

Discussion about duties of Personnel Committee (requested by Personnel Committee)
Council has authority to execute all personnel actions. They have exercised that authority in the last couple of years. Is there a need for a Personnel Committee that is not involved in Personnel Actions? It was noted that there are certain duties assigned to the Personnel Committee which are not directly personnel actions. Mostly bookkeeping and policy review. A committee dealing with policy reviews could cover those and others.
Council advised that Personnel Committee should continue with authorized actions until otherwise advised. Concept of Policy Review Committee held for later discussion.
Personnel Committee will pursue updating of personnel files.

Proposal for Strategic Planning Committee
A group to create a church plan of action for the next 3 – 5 years. Group of 8-9 composed of individuals from various church leadership groups.
Question of what the effect this would have on new Senior Pastor. Would it be binding?
Discussion that this is part of the present assignment of Council + Staff. Is a new group needed? Could people be found to serve?
Discussion will continue at next Council meeting.

Discussion of Single Service vs. 0900 + 1100
There has been much input to leadership in favor of single service.
There are significant arguments both for and against single service.
Against
Need for earlier/later service time due to employment/family.
Effect on time for Sunday School.
Church not on steady ground.
Variety of service styles unsettling.
For
Ease load on volunteers.
Contact with larger group of members
Enjoy variety of music style.
Concerns
Sanctuary vs. FLC
Traditional vs. Contemporary
Inward vs. Outward focus
Crossover period between services
Would 2 services be identical?
Flip-Flop is detrimental to attendance
What will new Senior Pastor desire?
Other possibilities
Once a month single service
Choir Congregational sing service at different time
Actively recruit more volunteers
Comments
We need to die to consumer christian mind set
Provide bread of life, not cotton candy
How will new senior pastor react to decision?
Proposal
Making decision on narrow vote of Council is undesirable.
Postpone reverting to two services
Have series of congregational conversations on this subject.
Follow with congregational poll
Still the danger of a narrow church vote.
Motion (paraphrased)
Remain at a single 10AM service during congregational conversations including, but not limited to, prayer service and round table discussions, culminating in a church poll on Jan 30. Both active members and active non-members will be eligible to participate in the poll. Results will be used as guidance by Church Council in their next deliberation.
Motion passed 4 – 2. Rob and Tami will announce on Sunday.
